Wakodahatchee Wetlands Field Trip
Saturday, March 19, 2005

The Pelican Island Audubon Society field trip to the Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach on Saturday, March 19, 2005, was worth the trip for the small group that participated.

Ellie Van Os reported:
Although we had a small turn-out for the field trip on Saturday, we had great weather and the birds were plentiful, close, and easy to spot…. here is a [partial] list of birds spotted:
Great Egret
Tri-colored Heron
Great Blue Herons (on nests with chicks)
Anhinga (on nest with chicks)
Black-necked Stilts (pair)
Double-crested Cormorants
Tree Swallows
Red-winged Blackbirds
Green-winged Teal
Blue-winged Teal
Mottled Ducks
Palm Warblers
Sora
Common Moorhen
American Coot
Purple Gallinule
Limpkin
Forster's Tern
Turkey Vulture
Boat-tailed Grackles

Carol Christy added:
The Wakodahatchee Wetlands was an engineering marvel. There many species of birds were foraging and nesting, and a long boardwalk allowed the human visitors to observe the wildlife exceptionally close by. Several uncommon species showed off before gathered clumps of people... such as a Purple Gallinule and a Sora. And our more common friends posed and preened, unconscious of the awed bystanders.

Thanks to Alice Rowe, Ellie Van Os, and Carol Christy for the images.
