Pelican Island Audubon Society Canoe Trips

The Pelican Island Audubon Society features a monthly canoe trip for Audubon members and their guests. Under the direction of experienced canoe guides, these trips to locations around the area explore remnants of wild Florida up close.

The March trip pictured above set out from the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL) located at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (ORCA) in Indian River County under the guidance of Alice Rowe, pictured upper left, and Dr. Richard Baker. After weaving down a narrow channel cutting through dense mangroves, the canoes ventured out into the open waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Along the way a great number of birds were sighted and identified including a reddish egret, white pelicans, and yellow-crowned night herons. Paddling around the Lagoon, a large manatee came close, a dolphin swam by chasing a school of fish, and the island rookeries soon to be filled with nesting birds were examined.

Don't miss out on the next exciting trip! For more information and to sign up, contact the Pelican Island Audubon Society office at 567-3520.

There is a $5 donation requested from Audubon members to go on a canoe trip. Non-Audubon members are requested to donate $20 which includes membership to the Pelican Island Audubon Society.
