| Eagle expert to give talk in Vero Beach By staff report March 27, 2005 VERO BEACH — The woman in charge of Audubon of Florida's Eagle- watch program will give a presentation about eagles and other birds of prey in Vero Beach on Monday evening. Lynda White will be featured at the 7:30 p.m. meeting of the Pelican Island Audubon Society, said Richard Baker, president. The meeting will take place at the Vero Beach Community Center, 2266 14th Ave. Baker said White is expected to bring several live raptors for showing. EagleWatch is a volunteer program that helps the protection of active bald eagle nest sites by providing information on the activity of nesting pairs. The program is active in 39 Florida counties, according to the Audubon EagleWatch Web site, with more than 250 volunteers monitoring 265 nests. Locally, Baker and others have been watching an active nest in Sebastian,
on property slated for residential development. A recent letter to Baker
from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicates the service is aware
of the nest and already has worked with the developers of an adjacent
tract to minimize any impact from construction in the area. |
