Prairie Field Trip - February 25, 2006 |

Approximately 40 members of the Society took part in the field trip to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park on Saturday, February 25, 2006. Park biologist Paul Miller led the field trip to watch researchers mist-netting and banding birds, primarily the endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, on the Prairie. A list of birds seen at Kissimmee Prairie that day compiled by Richard & Juanita Baker and Jens & Melissa Tripson include the Double Crested Cormorant, Anhinga, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, Turkey, White Ibis, Wood Stork, Mottled Duck, Mallard Duck, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Crested Caracara, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered Hawk, American Kestrel, Sandhill Crane, Killdeer, Ring-billed Gull, Mourning Dove, Eurasian Collared Dove, Common Ground Dove, Burrowing Owl, Yellowed-bellied Sapsucker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Fish Crow, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, Northern Mockingbird, Loggerhead Shrike, European Starling, White-eyed Vireo, Solitary Vireo (Blue-Headed), Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Palm Warbler, Black & White Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Northern Cardinal, Rufous-sided Towhee, Bachman’s Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow (Eastern), Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Eastern Meadowlark, Boat-tailed Grackle, and the Common Grackle. Below are images of a Henslow's Sparrow that was mist-netted. A life bird for many on the trip, Henslow's Sparrow is an extremely secretive bird rarely assuming an exposed perch and normally escapes intruders by fleeing through the grass rather than flying. |
