Field trip leader Jens Tripson, at left, briefs the group on what we might expect to find on Jack Island which is located in St. Lucie County on the Indian River Lagoon.
After passing over a long narrow foot bridge, the group sets out to cross the island to reach the observation tower. Several Palm Warblers, a Gray Catbird, and an immature Ibis were spotted during the walk.
At the observation tower, the group was excited to see several Ospreys. Besides a variety of Herons and Egrets, several Belted Kingfishers, and lots of Turkey Vultures, two Roseate Spoonbills flew past close to the tower and landed on the island.
The row of condos along A1A on North Hutchinson Island are visible in this view looking eastward back across Jack Island. Jack Island is over 900-acres large and consists mainly of mangroves and mosquito impoundments. Hiking trails provide access all around it.
The Sun begins to set in this view from the tower.
The group takes one final look before heading back.
