March 28, 2005 General Meeting
A crowd of over 150 people attended the March 28, 2005 meeting of the Pelican Island Audubon Society at the Vero Beach Community Center to hear Lynda White from the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey and to see the raptors she brought from the Center.
Lynda White and a barred owl look on as Jim White takes up the crested caracara for a walk around the room so the audience can get a close look.
All the birds, including this crested caracara, were very relaxed around people. The birds, either through injury or through birth defect, would not survive in the wild so they are permanent residents of the Center.
The burrowing owl eyes the surroundings.

From the slide presentation, ranchers are shown stringing up bald eagles on a fence line before there were eagle protection laws. The birds were killed in the erroneous belief they preyed on livestock. Today, even with the laws, eagles face many threats from development and other habitat disruptions.
