Rookery Island Pontoon Boat Ride

May 21, 2005 Field Trip

Above: Young Wood Storks.
River Lilly Cruises hosted the Pelican Island Audubon Society excursion on a pontoon boat to visit an island rookery in the St. Lucie River. Deena Wade, holding the microphone, about center in image, guided the tour along with her husband, Dana Wade.
With the boat anchored just a short distance from the island, the great variety of birds in the rookery with their young were easily viewed. It was a unique and special treat for all those who attended. At left, a young Wood Stork cozies up to its parent.

Backlit by the bright morning Sun, the muscle and bone in this Egret's wing are easily seen.
