The intrepid canoeists are seen in the Indian River Lagoon with the Vero Beach power plant off in the distance to the north.
A Great Egret beating its way toward the rookery island. . . .
. . . .and a Tricolored Heron. . . .
. . . .and a Great Blue Heron.
Two more species of birds nesting on the island include the Great Blue Heron, at upper left, standing over its nest, and the Double-crested Cormorant, at upper right, seen with a nestling popping its head out of the nest.
Another bird species nesting on the island is the Cattle Egret. Seen here, above left and below, in flight, and at right with the long feathers denoting its breeding plumage.

ABOVE: A Cattle Egret flies in with a little twig for its nest.

LEFT: A distant view of a Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron standing on the shore of the island.

A real surprise came when an American Oystercatcher landed right next to my kayak and then proceeded to walk around it. The Oystercatcher might have found my kayak's color to be a bit alluring since the kayak is the same garish colors as the bird's bill.
The canoes and kayaks head for home.
