2012 October 13 - Saturday - West Regional Water Reclamation Plant - Guide: Peter Sutherland - An excellent local site for birding numerous species - Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the entrance to the facility, 8405 8th Street, Vero Beach. October 21 - Sunday - Sebastian Inlet State Park - Guide: Juanita Baker - 8:15 a.m.-10:30 a.m. - Catch the migrating shorebirds at Sebastian Inlet State Park at low tide when they gather to feed. Enter the North Gate to the parking lot on the right which is closest to the Tide pool where we will meet. (Requires normal park entrance fee.) Basic Birding. Photographers welcome. Low Tide: 7:14 AM Sunrise: 7:26 AM Beforehand, see PIAS video taken at the Park: Basic Birding November 10 - Saturday - St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park – Guide: Judy Elseroad – The group will hike up to two miles in sand to see Florida Scrub-Jays. Wear long pants and closed shoes/no sandals or shorts. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Platt parking lot on the north side of 512, west of I-95 and east of Fellsmere. Trip will end at approximately 10:00 a.m. November 11- Sunday - ORCA Canoe Trip - 8:00 am to noon- Meet at the FMEL Boathouse 200 9th St. SE (Oslo Rd) east of US 1. The field trip will move to other locations in Indian River County to view Scrub-Jays at the discretion of the Guide. January 19-February 23 - FMEL-PIAS 2013 Volunteer Stewardship Core Class January 23 - Wednesday - North Sebastian Conservation Area - Guide: Jane Schnee - Meet at 8:00 a.m. - Meet at the entrance across from the Post Office on Main Street in Sebastian February 6 - Wednesday - Sir Peter Crane, Dean, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies will present "The Interconnectedness of Natural and Human Systems: From Global Change to the Indian River Lagoon". Place: Waxlax Auditorium, St. Edwards School, 1895 Saint Edwards Drive, off of A-1-A South, Vero Beach. February 16 - Saturday - Indrio Savannahs Preserve - Guide: Tina Marchese - Meet at 8:00am at Tozour Road and US1, North Fort Pierce. This 297 acre preserve is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. It hosts 5 natural ecological communities and 3 miles of hiking trails. February 22 - Friday - Padgett Creek Ranches - Guide: Ralph Monticello, Indian River Land Trust - Meet at 7:00 a.m. at the Publix parking lot at the corner of 58th Avenue and State Road 60 March 6 - Wednesday - Quality of Life Indicators: Quality of Life indicators, field trip, meet at 4 p.m. at the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, at the information booth at the start of the boardwalk. We will walk to the refuge overlook and discuss the state of Indian River Lagoon, what condition we would like to see it restored to, and what ecological, social and economic indicators would be most useful to measure progress over coming years. March 7 - Thursday - St. Lucie Audubon Society Presents Birding Adventures with James Currie at Indian River State College, 3209 Virginia Ave, Fort Pierce, FL March 21 - Thursday - Combined Trip: Wakodahatchee Wetlands, 13026 Jog Road, Delray Beach. and Green Cay Nature Center, 12800 Hagen Ranch Road, Boynton Beach - Guide: Bill Loftus - boardwalk over wetlands/expect to see numerous species of waterbirds and other wildlife - Meet at 6:00 a.m. at the TA Truck Stop, corner of SR 60 and 90th Avenue, for carpool. Return to Vero at approximately 5:00 p.m. April 2 – Tuesday - Turkey Creek Sanctuary in the Malabar, Palm Bay area of Brevard Co. Guide: Carolyn Cimino. The walk will start at 7:45 am and will conclude at 11 am. I will be staying longer so anyone who wants to continue another hour or so is welcome to join me. Target birds: warblers, vireos and other songbirds. Please bring sun lotion, water, snacks, binoculars, bird book, and a pen for the checklist. Please park in the lot adjacent to the main walkway of TCS. Do not park in the library parking lot. Try to carpool if possible, as it is close to a 40 min ride.
